In
1968 Mattel introduced 16 miniature
cars giving them the name Hot
Wheels. With their stunning bright
”Spectra flame” paint jobs. Custom
wheels, racing strips and large
engines protruding out of their
hoods many of these new Hot Wheels
modeled custom versions of real cars
in an era of the automobile industry
that produced the most stunning
cars of any time. Mattel released
Hot Wheels with names like Custom
Camaro, Custom Barracuda, Custom
Corvette, Custom Mustang and
custom…… Cougar, Eldorado, Firebird,
Fleetside “based on Chevrolet
ElCamino”, T-Bird, Volkswagen
Mattel captured the minds and
hearts of little boys and soon after
their release there was little doubt
Mattel and Hot Wheels would surpass
the powerhouse in die cast miniature
car toys of the day, Matchbox and
assume the role of industry leader
in die cast cars.
These
early cars came with a red circle
embossed on their wheels looking
similar to a whitewall except in a
red color. Years later this distinct
feature or Red line coined the
popular phrase Redline Hot Wheels.
Today the term Redline Hot Wheels
represent Hot Wheels released from
1968 to 1977
These
early Hot Wheels are now consider
collectible and as with all
collectibles certain models and
variations are more sought after by
