Mattel Hot Wheels Car History


Hot Wheels 1968 -

Mattel Hot Wheels released their first line of sixteen models. These Cool Cars featured redline tires, and some had roofs painted black to look like vinyl. Their stunning bright ”Spectraflame” paint jobs. Custom wheels, racing strips and large engines protruding out of their hoods many of these new Hot Wheels modeled custom versions of real cars in an era of the automobile industry that produced the most stunning cars of any time. Mattel released Hot Wheels Cars with names like Custom Camaro, Custom Barracuda, Custom Corvette, Custom Mustang and custom…… Cougar, Eldorado, Firebird, Fleetside “based on Chevrolet ElCamino” , T-Bird, Volkswagen


Hot Wheels 1969 -

Sales of Hot Wheels far surpassed expectation. With sales ten times higher than expected. Twenty-four new cars were released expanding the Hot Wheel line to 40.

Hot Wheels 1970

This was the first year the Snake and Mongoose cars were produced. Mattel's first promotional cars were made for Jack in the Box this year. Thirty-three new vehicles were introduced. Mattel introduced Spoilers, Heavyweights, and Club Kit Cars.

Hot Wheels 1971 -

Mattel introduced thirty-five new models. This was the last year Hot Wheels were made in the U.S.

Hot Wheels 1972 -

Long gas lines, Inflation, as with nearly everything in a slow economy Hot Wheels were not selling as well as before. Therefore, Mattel (take out had) made only seven new models this year.


Hot Wheels 1973

Inflation caused Mattel to cut costs. This year's cars would only be issued for one year due to poor quality. Spectraflame paint was discontinued and they began to use enamel paint.



Hot Wheels 1974

Mattel started using tampos on the Hot Wheels, beginning with a series called Flying Colors. Seven new (new what?) and eight embellished casting were issued.


Hot Wheels 1975 -

This year 23 new models were introduced. Mattel Hot Wheels continued issuing models in alternate colors.


Hot Wheels 1976 -

This is the year Super Chromes were released. This was a line of eighteen chrome models.


Hot Wheels 1977 -


There were 69 vehicles with 12 new castings and changes on 10 previously issued models. This year Mattel started phasing out "redlines".
